God is concerned about our hearing. Not with whether we can hear high pitched sounds or a whisper from across the room, but whether we can hear him. Psalm 78 begins with an exhortation to "hear my teaching" and Jeremiah 6:17-19 has a repeated refrain to "hear”. We are unable to respond to that which we cannot hear.
Jeremiah is preaching to an audience that will not listen. They don't mind going through external religious actions but they are unconcerned about actually hearing from God. It is so easy to go through the motions and not really hear from God. We can read the One Year Bible (We have made it to October 6!), attend church services and serve in various ways and yet still miss God. This is the warning of all of our passages today. Don't miss God!
Jeremiah warns us to not miss God in religion, Paul warns us in Colossians to not miss God in tradition and Asaph to not miss God in his miracles. We need to desperately pray for ears to hear what God is saying to us.
Question of the day: How can you have ears to not miss what God is saying?
Father God, help me to hear from you. Help me not to miss you in the midst of busyness, religious activities and good things. Help me to never be satisfied with anything less than meeting with you. Help me to hear from you and be led by you today. Amen.
